Arup Community Project

The Challenge

Arup’s community projects are a fundamental part of their business. They wanted a dedicated website to promote this activity worldwide, showcasing their current charitable partnerships and creating a platform through which they could forge new ones.

The Solution

We had already worked on Arup’s global corporate site, but for Arup Communities they wanted a more approachable, less commercial feel.  With this in mind, we settled on a more visually driven, illustrated look, based around a poignant doodle penned by Ove Arup himself. This hand-drawn style permeated the site, appearing not only in the page headers, but being used in icons throughout the site.

To emphasise the global nature of Arup Communities activities we suggested an interactive map, that would let visitors easily discover what Arup is doing in their part of the world.  Projects can take years to complete, so to help visitors navigate the progress, we created project timelines.

One of the ways Arup reaches out to people in need is by offering the services of its global team of specialists.  These individuals offered a potential goldmine of on-the-ground news and information about how Arup was making a difference to people around the world by generating a steady stream of relevant social media content. To help promote these stories we suggested to Arup that they should include a listening feed to monitor social media around their different projects and display the best posts on the site.

For ease of use, we employed the same extensible, Sitecore CMS as their main corporate site, meaning their site managers and content providers already had the skills necessary to manage the new site. Simple to update hero image carousels and the project map help to keep the site relevant and fresh - blending the latest Arup Communities project news with partner stories and social content.

Arup are now enjoying a dedicated Microsite that demonstrates their global contribution to charitable causes and enables them to publish new stories and experiences around future projects with ease.
